A POLICY BRIEF MEETING ON FOUR YEARS OF HIV PREVENTION FOR RURAL YOUTH IN NIGERIA

Date: Thursday July 5, 2012

Venue: Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Abuja Hotel 1, Ladi Kwali Street, Maitama, Abuja, Nigeria

Time: 9:00am

OVERVIEW

In January 2008, a team of Nigerian and Canadian researchers were awarded funding by Global Health Research Initiative (GHRI) to carry out action research project “HIV Prevention for Rural Youth (HP4RY): Mobilizing Schools and Communities”

The goal of the HP4RY project is to reduce HIV vulnerability of youth in Nigeria. The objective is to develop and use research evidence to build and evaluate a model that strengthens and expands the influence of the Family Life and HIV Education (FLHE) initiative.

As part of the activity marking the end of the 4 year research project, the project team is organizing a one day policy brief meeting. The meeting seeks to address among other things policy implications of HP4RY research in rural schools, for programming in rural communities, policy to support collaboration and partnerships etc.

The meeting will bring together government and non‐government stakeholders, policy makers, development partners, health practitioners, astute scholars, social service providers and advocacy organisations. The keynote address titled: Addressing Youth Vulnerability to HIV/AIDS in Nigeria will be delivered by Professor John Idoko, Director‐General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA).

The policy brief meeting will also featured a presentation of a special edition of the African Journal of Reproductive Health (AJRH), published by the Women’s Health and Action Research Centre (WHARC).
